My nannan, Sheila Birds passed away on 6th February 2019 following a long and frustrating battle with PSP.
Progressive Supranuclear Palsy is an incredibly rare and individual condition caused by protein build up in the brain leading to nerve cella damage. The damage leads to difficulty with balance, movement, eyesight, speech, and swallowing. The condition gets progressively worse.
There are believed to be around 4,000 people living with PSP in the UK at any one time.
There is no cure for PSP.
PSPA is the only charity supporting families affected by this condition and I would like to fundraise for them. For nan.
Before PSP, my nan was very active. We used to cook together, go on day trips, and have knock out 5 course breakfasts on Saturday mornings in our PJs. We didn’t always get on, I was the living and breathing cliche that is the stroppy teenager. But we still had our Saturday mornings together.
Nan, this Christmas, the first without you by my side as I watch Muppets Christmas Carol on Christmas Eve (it’s tradition!), I raise my glass of red to you. Love you always.
